Chivers recalls his first impressions of Kay Rice as an advocate for her family as well as other people living in poverty. All her life she's been mistreated by landlords, employers and social welfare agencies. Now she's ready to fight back. Having struggled for years to meet the basic needs of her kids, she wants to show other Canadians how it feels to be relegated to the lowest rung on the social ladder.

im right here with my mom right now and i read her all the status update, after 23 years of my mom raising us kids, she had bought a building in the north, it has 3 apartments so that me and my sister breanna witch now is 17, my sister breanna at 15 she was raped, no clue who the father is, but breanna has a a beautiful girl, her name is Hope, we named her that because a hope for the better future, my mom and i are helping breanna raise the baby, the building that my mom had bought there was an apartment that has 4 bedrooms it is un usable at this time. but we are living in the other 2 apartmens. and well we would like to say where making it okay, but where still struggeling, but life goes on. ! thank you everyone for your support.

hello i was in this documentary when i was 11-12. just wanting to say that i am 20 years old now and i am doin quite well for myself nowadays. it was definatly still a struggle for a really long time after that documentary was finished, but after being on my own for a few years now things were tough at first but are being put into place slowly but surely. also would like to mention something about carl.. my stepdad in that documentary.. well i am in the court process right now with him for sexual assault and assault and well rape.. not only were we goin through poverty but also being abused quite badly.. it was not until i was nearly 18 when this had all came out even tho he had left when i was 13. anyways.. i will update some more in a bit.. just finally found somewhere to contact someone from this!

How is the Rice family getting on, does anybody know? My own kids watched your documentary and my 12 year old will sometimes say, "I wonder how the Rice family is doing." I've often wondered too. Can anyone update us?
