This film was created by English & Social Studies students at Lucerne Secondary School New Denver, as part of their curriculum in learning about the history of the Japanese Canadian Internment during WWII.
The following is their Artist Statement:
Our artistic vision: displaying our Communities respect, acceptance, and involvement by making memorial centres such as the Kohan and Nikkei.
What stands out for me about the internment is the fact that the culture brought here by the internees still remains, integrated with the previous western culture. So that we-the later generations-experience it in the community to this day.
We chose to communicate our ideas the way we did because we wanted to display our message about the Nikkei and Kohan with as much impact as possible. We tried to make our ideas clear and concise.
We hope others will learn the importance of having the Kohan and the Nikkei centre as part of our community garden. As well as how much it means to former internees and community members here today.
