This film was created by English & Social Studies students at Lucerne Secondary School New Denver, as part of their curriculum in learning about the history of the Japanese Canadian Internment during WWII.
The following is their Artist Statement:
We decided to do a black and white film. All you hear is sad violins, showing how horrible the living situations were for Japanese Canadians.
What stands out for us is that Japanese-Canadians were considered a threat during the war only because of their race. They were treated as if they were prisoners, all their human rights and possessions taken away.
Black and white felt like a powerful way to showing our feelings about the darkness of this time in Canadian history, but also the light and strength of the Japanese-Canadian people.
We hope others will learn from our film that the way Japanese-Canadians were treated was not right. They were Canadian and they should have been trusted and valued.

Even prior to World War II, discrimination toward the Japanese had been growing in British Columbia (B.C.), the province where the majority of Japanese had settled since they first immigrated to Canada in 1877.
