Canadian social justice organization Inter Pares (meaning “among equals”) is proud to Take Back the Day. Mother’s Day, that is. Determined to reclaim the original meaning of Mother’s Day, Inter Pares is using gifts from its spring campaign ‘Take Back the Day’ to honour the true meaning of Mother’s Day, and supporting women around the world working for peace and justice in their communities.

The original ‘Mother’s Friendship Day’ was founded by 19th century community activist Ann Jarvis. The concept aimed to reconcile American Civil War-torn families based on a shared love of mothers. As the movement gained popularity and was declared a national holiday, increased commercialization of the event threatened to destroy the true message conveyed by Mother’s Day. Inter Pares is now launching a campaign to reclaim the true meaning of Mother’s Day by making a difference that counts.

“This Mother’s Day, Inter Pares is celebrating women around the world who are working for safer, healthier, and more peaceful communities,” says Rita Morbia, executive director of Inter Pares. Gifts made to Inter Pares’ Take Back the Day campaign will support a wide variety of international organizations addressing the structural roots of poverty and injustice in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada. Donors can make a gift and send printed or e-cards via the Inter Pares website, to up to 10 different recipients. Cards and delivery dates can be personalized with individual messages and photos.

This Mother's Day, you can take back the holiday's original meaning: give a day's tribute to the women in your life by supporting other women who are bringing about generations of change. Pay homage to your mother, remember your grandmother, or recognize any person important to you that is making a positive difference.
