Media for social change

The Montreal Anarchist Book Fair, the largest such event anywhere in North America, rolled out the red (and black) carpet this May bringing in hundreds of participants from across the continent to take part in a two-day exchange of books, films, zines, workshops, and stories.

Group discussions centered around some of today's most timely topics to do with justice, self-determination, and State repression; from current struggles on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory to building movements in solidarity with prisoners. The fair itself featured over 100 book vendors, distributors, independent presses and political groups from all over Montreal, Quebec, North America, and abroad.

Outside the bookfair saw its own share of visitors throughout the weekend including a police squad investigating an alleged bomb threat at the site; and a protest directed at anarcho-primitivist John Zerzan, speaker at the bookfair.

This 22-minute audio documentary features interviews with Amy Shwartz, a member of the Bookfair Organizing Collective; Angela Sterritt and Gord Hill on the Olympic land grab; Martin Lukacs on the struggle of the Algonquins of Barrier Lake; Sara Falconer on organizing in solidarity with prisoners; and Philly's Pissed (Philadelphia) on using harm reduction to support responsible decision-making in our communities.
