The declaration for equality in education
Parents in action for education
Over the past two years, Parents in action for education has been involved in the creation of a Declaration for equality in education, asking the schools to lift barriers to genuine parent participation. The creation of the Declaration is a collective act; input is needed and wanted from large numbers of parents of diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
On February 22, 2008, an consultation was launched across greater Montreal to explore with families the multiplicity of their experiences with the public school system. Close to four hundred people came together in discussion circles about the Declaration, in a popular forum, at public presentations and workshops held by community organizations, citizens' groups and schools. These parents and some young people came up with useful ideas to enrich and complete the writing of the Declaration.
In 2009, Parents in action for education will officially launch the Declaration for equality in education. The group hopes to bring together parents and those who have influence or power within the school system to come to an agreement on the changes necessary for real parent participation in public schools. Everyone can contribute to this long-term process! Get informed or share your ideas by contacting Parents in action for education at info@parentsaction.ca
