A note from supporters of the Brave New 1984 project

This subject is a hot topic, addressing the wide-spread anxiety over the general state of global politics and our society. One needs only scratch the surface to find tons of websites and commentary concerning such issues as state control, privacy-invasion, militarism, consumerism, etc. Without question, technology has come to further empower humans since the writings of Orwell and Huxley, both to egalitarian and to oppressive ends, and the questions and fears that such literature expressed is really quite relevant today.


Indeed, most Canadian youth today are doubly media-savvy and aware, having grown up in a technologically-sophisticated environment unlike that of their parents (familiarity with internet, video games, and other media). Therefore, I can see the Brave New 1984 project developing in classrooms as well as in the public sphere, alongside the curriculum in high school. Typically in Canada, most students have read either one of the two of theses novels (BNW or 1984) as a high school English class requirement, and instructors, I'm sure, would be very warm to some interactive educational programs that can be accessed via the internet. Certainly, video cameras and equipment is ubiquitous today (it was in high school that I first became familiar with video making and editing). There might even be a specific component for teachers in the classroom, and invitations for groups of students to submit their films (an idea that might be developed to gain more funding for the project). Such a program would certainly inspire students to reflect and inquire into the state of the world.


I have come up with a bunch of videos that we could easily stream off the interactive site for the purposes of inspiring and educating the students. Of course, this project will also function as a kind of study, the results of which you can use in the eventual documentary. The website will also be interesting for highlighting other literature on related subjects.

 What I found interesting and of particular use are the thousands of videos that can be found online on Google and YouTube, highlighting people's concerns and anxieties about State control and the individual's rights. There is a ton of interesting news clips (and could provide the material for a scene in the documentary in the style of "The Corporation"); also lots of visual materials. All that is needed is some public participation, and what better way to reach people than through the NFB’s CITIZENShift website?!

Pour le projet orwell-huxley, c'est intéressant.

C'est le nouveau chemin que va prendre un certain type de cinéma...  Ça va
devenir une pratique amateure, éventuellement, les gens vont être prêts a
payer pour que leur films soient vu.  Le cinéma va se pratiquer comme les
sports amateurs ou les gens paient pour avoir accès aux compétitions.

Des gens vont essayer de capitaliser la dessus très rapidement.  Ça se fait
déjà dans le foisonnement des festivals de films.

Le projet va créer une tribune intéressante, un mini-YouTube pour un public
de niche.  Une façon de rallier les gens a travers le vidéo, j'aime bien, je
serais le genre de gars à participer à ça.

J'y vois une genre de belle pétition vidéo sur l'état du monde.  La question
de la pétition est posée par les 2 fameux livres.


Finalement, en parlant de dystopie, je vais me permettre d'être super
arrogant...  Je sais que tu es le genre de gars à prendre ces questions
ironiques avec un sourire et à y voir mieux que de l'arrogance...

Considères-tu que tu travailles pour le Ministère de la Vérité quand tu fais
un film pour l'ONF?

Est-ce que je travaille pour le Ministère de la Vérité si je décides de
faire un film sur l'intégration des immigrants, puisque les institutions
financent n'importe quoi sur ce thème la, de ces temps-ci?

Est-ce que le Ministère de la Vérité de notre temps utilises les
documentaires activistes comme soupape de pression pour tenir les activistes
occupés et leur faire imaginer qu'ils ne sont pas trop impuissants?

J'espère que ça ne t'insulte pas ce genre de questions, que tu ne penseras
pas que je suis un weirdo.  C'est le genre de question qu'on doit se poser,
selon moi...

J'ai lu 1984 pour la première fois à 9 ans.  Le livre m'a été confisqué pas
un professeur au primaire et je me suis alors rendu compte à quel point il
devait être important!

Finalement, après tant d'ironie sur le sujet, je dois préciser que je trouve
le projet super intéressant parce qu'il va collecter ce genre d'opinions la.
Et c'est le genre de projet qui fait un beau pas à l'extérieur du Ministère
de la Vérité... peut-être...

J'aimerais aussi participer à ça! Du coté des participants et de ton côté.
