In our schools, not all students are equal. Too many students experience failure or drop out, and face discrimination and several other forms of injustice. Continuing to ignore inequalities, giving up, or pointing fingers simply contribute to violating the rights of children.
The film Parents in Action for Education takes a look at a group of parents who are engaged in creating a new way of relating between parents and schools within a social justice framework. Over the last two years, Parents in Action for Education have been working on creating a Declaration for Equality in Education to demand that schools lift the barriers that block parents from participating in their children’s education.
The group Parents in Action for Education won the Roma-Lavoie prize in May 2008 for their social justice initiative, the Declaration for Equality in Education.

It must be difficult to balance between what is essentially affirmative action in the classroom, with true equal opportunities. How would it be fair to caucassian students who work hard and do well, if more attention was given to lower-achieving students of colour? Taxpayer dollars, most of which come from caucassians, are then used to pay for educating a culture that focusses more on gang of poor work ethic students who are only motivated my criminal activities? Instead, we should fund programs that give students a wider palette. For once let's teach them about binary numbers or underwater geography. Let's expand the minds of our children, and if certain groups don't care about school, then so be it.
