CITIZENShift is a multimedia platform dedicated to media for social change.
Our ever-growing network engages people from all backgrounds to explore and debate contemporary issues, to contribute their own material – and to use media to make a difference.

On CitizenShift you can explore today’s crucial issues through film, photography, articles, blogs and podcasts. This social media network is a space to share media, voice opinions and explore unique content from active citizens, independent filmmakers and media artists.

Today’s media landscape is rapidly changing.  With camcorders, cell phones, digital cameras, and laptops in the hands of ordinary citizens, people are now telling their own stories.  What we know as the "mainstream media" is actively being challenged by a citizen media revolution: stories told from multiple perspectives by those who are directly affected.

CitizenShift was born out of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in 2004, inspired by the nfb's Challenge for Change, a 1960's experimental  initiative in community-led documentary filmmaking.  Now, with the momentum from a continuing partnership with the NFB and the support of our new host organization L'Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM), CitizenShift continues to thrive as an independently produced and community driven space.

As one of the very first Social Media Websites out there, CitizenShift is host to an active and engaged community, both online and through live events such as screenings, debates, workshops and film launches.

CitizenShift is ever evolving as our contributors, from a diverse array of communities in Canada and abroad, define the scope and content; each podcast a story, each blog a conversation, each dossier a chapter of this citizens' work in progress. We are part of a global movement to empower individuals like you with the tools of media development and distribution through our dynamic site.
